Performance Pointers Archives Nutella Commercial: The Unforgivable Sin of Omission Because - like countless advertisers before it - this commercial conveniently omits some fairly important information. To whit: That per 37 gram serving, Nutella contains 20 grams of ... wait for it ... SUGAR. Source: The company’s own website: www.nutellausa.com It’s not rocket science to figure out, that adding “ ... and over half of each serving is 100% refined sugar” wouldn’t do much for the product’s image as a healthy sandwich topping. Of course, knowing that Nutella is manufactured by Ferrero (USA) - the makers of those delectable gold-wrapped chocolates - puts things into a different perspective. I’m no moral crusader, but peddling high-sugar content foods to children by disguising them as healthy is almost on a par with peddling “light” cigarettes to teenagers as “less harmful”. If companies want to establish and enhance meaningful interactions with their customers, then they should start by being honest and forthright in those interactions themselves. And they need to stop treating their customers like idiots, who can’t see when they’re being bamboozled.
Oh, and I like Nutella. But I am under no illusion that it is a healthy alternative to a multi-grain sandwich with real (as opposed to processed) cheese and freshly sliced tomato.
