Career Management – what
is it, and why is it important?
What is Career Management?
Managing your career combines Career Development and Career Planning. The method
provides individuals a vehicle for aligning their personal career goals to
their employer’s business goals and objectives, to develop and advance
their careers. A personal career development plan ensures that an individual
will be skilled and motivated to meet an employer’s current and future
needs.
What is a Career?
Work that uses all your strengths
and talents, in an environment that values your contribution, both
financially and in non-material ways, and that offers you ongoing opportunities
for growth and skills development. A career is more than a job, and
career coaching will get you beyond landing the next job ... you will
also create an intermediate and long-term Career Action Plan, and develop
strategies to achieve your long-term career goals - whether they are
a specific salary, a specific role, or a specific company. Or all three
...
What is Career Development?
A process of self-assessment and discovery leading to a better
understanding of strengths, skills, abilities and competencies, with
the objective of redefining goals and focus, and pursuing a more rewarding
career. Not just the next job, but developing a map and charting a
course to a future destination. You may not be able to go from one
position to the position of your choice in one step - a two or three-step
approach may bring more long-term growth.
What is Career Planning? When your career no longer "happens
to you," when you've taken control of your future and planned
your next steps. Coaching helps individuals gain the confidence that's
required to move forward with focus and clarity of purpose. Through
a process of self-assessment, skill identification and exploration
of work options, individuals can create a Career Action Plan, which
enhances their value and maps a path to their future.
